It has been awhile since a Madison County softball team has been able to bring home the regular season district and tournament titles. However, this year the Mountaineer girls had their eyes on the prize and never let anything get in the way of success.
The squad kicked off the start of its district tournament rally by playing the Ram girls of Strasburg. The night before Strasburg had a dominating victory over Manassas Park, and they came ready to give Madison a challenge.
This game proved to be a dogfight — going nine innings with a score of 2-1.
Sarah Ford was able to score the game-winning run off of a sacrifice fly deep into right field hit by Carrie Brown. Freshman Jordan Aylor was able to pick up the win on the mound for Madison.
The 2-1 win was especially poignant because it was Senior Night for the four Mountaineer girl seniors — Carrie Brown, Lauren Yowell, Sarah Ford and Erin Weaver.
The May 22 match-up proved to be the ultimate test for the Lady Mountaineers when Clarke County came to town for the Bull Run District Championship. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Madison scored all four runs on two hits and two errors.
Tough defense and solid pitching by junior Tiffany Geer led to the final 4-0 shut out.
Tiffany Geer showed leadership and dominance on the mound striking out five and giving up only four hits.
Seven Lady Mountaineer players were named to the All Bull Run District Teams. Senior Erin Weaver was named second team All District for outfield. Junior Cara McCurry was named second team All District for third base. Also, senior Lauren Yowell was named to the second team All Bull Run District for first base.
Four Mountaineer girls were selected for first team All Bull Run District. Senior Carrie Brown was named to the first team All District for second base. Senior Sarah Ford joined Brown on the first team for outfield. Freshman Jordan Aylor was first team All District as the at-large player. Junior Tiffany Geer was also named to the first team All Bull Run District for her performance as a pitcher.
The Bull Run District also named junior pitcher Tiffany Geer as the 2008 Bull Run District Player of the Year. Geer proved dominance by going 8-0 in the district. First year head coach B.J. Scott was named the Bull Run District Coach of the Year.
The Lady Mountaineers kicked off Region B play on Monday when they hosted Page County at the Waverly Yowell Elementary School field. Because of the Memorial Day holiday, The Eagle had an earlier production schedule this week, so Monday’s results will be in next’s week’s edition.
