MC softball team clinches title

The 2008 Madison County softball team did something last week that hasn’t been done in a couple years – it was able to bring the pride back to Madison by clenching this year’s Bull Run District regular season title. The score was 9-8 and the game proved to be a close one throughout all seven full innings of play.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lauren Yowell hit the game-winning double deep into center field that scored two runs. Yowell ended up with two doubles on the night and three RBIs. Jordan Aylor went three for four with three runs scored. Cara McCurry and Tiffany Geer had two hits each.

With the regular season championship, the Lady Mountaineers are guaranteed a spot in the regional tournament, where they will face off against a team from the Shenandoah District. However, based on how the girls do in the tournament will determine the seed they get in region play.

The Mountaineer girls were in action on the road Tuesday night at Manassas Park and Wednesday night at Strasburg, but results were unavailable at press time.

Coach BJ Scott’s crew got a bye from the first round of the Bull Run District Tournament and will play this Tuesday, May 20 in the Bull Run District semi-finals in Madison.
