There’s a new face coaching Madison County’s softball team this year – new to the MCHS diamond anyway. BJ Scott, who succeeds Gary Honaker, is also the Mountaineer volleyball coach. Coach Scott looks to put the 2008 softball team in the race for first place in the Bull Run District and to also enter it into state competition — something that the Madison softball program has not experienced since 1995.

He has the crew to do it — the 2008 Lady Mountaineer team has depth in just about everything. The squad has six seniors — Carrie Brown, Erin Weaver, Julie Dugan, Sarah Ford, Lauren Yowell and Kendall White. The amount of seniors adds to the experience on this team.

Juniors Hannah Morrison, Tiffany Geer, Becca Ryder, Cara McCurry and Kristi Aylor also add needed experience that will set this Mountaineer team above other teams in the district.

Newcomers to the team this year are sophomore Maci Dyer and freshmen Megan Clark, Jordan Aylor and Amanda Whittaker. The new talent to the team will be “something extra” to push the Mountaineer girls to the top and beyond.

The team gave Orange County a run for its money March 14 at the Waverly Yowell Elementary School field – the Mountaineer girls “home” field. But Madison ended up losing the close contest, 3-1.

The Hornet girls had phenomenal pitching, but Sarah Ford, Kendall White, Erin Weaver and Tiffany Geer still managed to collect hits off Orange’s Heather Jenkins.

The lone run for Madison came in the sixth inning when Tiffany Geer connected and sent a nice hit into the outfield. Kendall White then was able to hit a double into the outfield, which scored the runner.
Tiffany Geer pitched five solid innings and was then relieved by freshman Jordan Aylor.

The Lady Mountaineers were back in action Tuesday when they played Fluvanna County (results were unavailable at press time).

The team was also set to play an away game against Orange 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20.
