Border rivalries are special to fans with only one high school in the county. The border rivalry of Madison County and Orange County is the same way—even when only playing a benefit game. The Friday, Aug. 22 game, which was really just a scrimmage in the guise of real game, ended with a 34-6 Orange County win.
Orange started its predicted season starters including Quintin Hunter at quarterback. He was used in Friday’s Porterfield Park match-up as both a runner and as a passer. On the ground, he made 11 rushes for 59 yards and was the team’s leader in that category. He passed for 51 yards as well going 6-11 before being taken out of the game due to an injury.
The Hornet hosts were plagued by injuries in the game, at one point having two in 45 seconds. However, all of the players affected walked off under their own power.
Madison also had some players stand out in the game. Logan Terrell, presumed starter at running back, had 11 rushes and 52 yards in the game. A.J. Butler also followed him with five rushes and 28 yards. Will Taylor, starter at quarterback for 2008, threw for 136 yards and went 6-13 with one touchdown but a very costly interception run back for an Orange touchdown. Fumbles plagued both teams with Orange coming up lucky by recovering most of them, whether their own or Madison’s, with one coming on Madison’s one-yard line which was pushed into the end zone for an Orange touchdown.
Madison will start its regular football season at home Friday, Aug. 29 against Nelson County’s Governors at Eddie Dean Field. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. If you can’t make the game in person, be sure to check out http://www.madison-news.com Saturday, Aug. 30 for the score, a quick-read game summary and a photo.
