Madison County’s girls soccer team played one game last week. That game required extra time to decide a winner. A pair of five-minute overtime periods were added to the game until the Mountaineer girls were declared the winner over Wilson Memorial 4-3. That evened the teams record at 2-2 on the season.
The win came just at the right time as the team prepares to enter the meaty potion of its schedule including their first district match this week.
In the match with Wilson, the Madison struck first and early and came away at the half with a 2-1 advantage off of Holly Grubb and Samantha Cubbage goals in the first half. Wilson, however, powered its way back to tie the game and eventually pull ahead 3-2.
But in the waning minutes of the second half, Kelly Riner hit a game-tying goal to force OT. The first extra period was scoreless so the teams went to the second. This was where Samantha Cubbage hit one into the back of the net and won the game. On each of the goals, another player assisted as well. Rachel Strahan, Holly Grubb, Julia Craig and Ashley Sealander all had assists in this game.
The team has two games this week. Its first was Tuesday at Hoover Ridge against Greene County’s William Monroe (results were unavailable at press time). Its next is at Rappahannock County Friday. That one starts the Bull Run District portion of the team’s schedule.
