Madison County’s boys soccer team fought fiercely as it represented the Mountaineers against rival Greene County’s William Monroe March 25. Dousing the Dragons fire 2-1, Madison out shot its opponent 17-6.
“Once again we came out strong making our presence known early finding the net two times within 10 minutes of the start,” said Madison Coach Tim Bostic. “We used our defense to build solid combinations forward to get great shots on goal. We communicated well, and had a great first half.”
Both of Madison’s goals were scored in the first half of the game, with the first one in the second minute by Shepherd Waldenberger off a cross from Adam Holbrook. Just three minutes later, Waldenberger connected with the net once more for the Mountaineers final goal of the game. Waldenberger headed the ball into the goal after it deflected off an attempt by Matt Lewis to score.
The second half produced no goals for Madison.
“[In the] second half we got too confident for only being up 2-0,” said Bostic. “We stopped using the outsides, talking and getting good combination plays.”
Greene monopolized on the team’s confidence, scoring off a direct kick.
“Greene answered on a direct kick caused by stupid fouls which we had way too many of in the second half,” Bostic said. “It seemed we had a stupid foul on every play into our defensive third, which is dangerous against any team. We can play a whole lot better, we know it.”
Roman Mayorov received a yellow card during the game for a late tackle and Braxton Puryear was awarded one for persistent infringement. Puryear sat out the rest of the game after earning a second yellow card for a late tackle, which translated to a soft red.
Madison plays again April 8 in Stanardsville against William Monroe.
