CVaSports.com and the BD Basketball Foundation conducted their May 5 inaugural Central Virginia Basketball Honors Banquet to honor those young athletes from the 18 area high schools in Central Virginia who have exemplified character and academic achievement, including some from Madison County.

The purpose of this celebration of the high school careers of extraordinary young men and women was to bring athletics back to its roots, back to its foundation, to the vitally important role of teaching life lessons and developing character. By spotlighting those young men and women who have consistently done things “the right way” off the court, organizers hope to send a powerful message that character, academics and leadership come first, before statistics and final scores.

Madison County High School award recipients include:

• Male Scholar Athlete winner – Junior Kyle Louk, 4.28 GPA, National Beta Club member, Spanish Honor Society, Engineering Club, varsity golf, basketball and baseball.

• Female Scholar Athlete winner – Senior Erin Warren, 3.87 GPA, National Beta Club member, yearbook editor, member of FCA and Varsity Club. Won nine varsity athletic letters in volleyball, basketball and soccer. All District and All Region in volleyball. Church mission trips to West Virginia to rebuild homes and Hurricane Katrina relief work in Mississippi and will attend James Madison University in the fall.

• Male Character Achievement winner – Junior Chris Fincham, embodies the word “teammate,” gives energy and leadership, never taking a minute for granted, talks to teammates about getting better and being a champion, is a tenacious defender and won games with his heart and effort, has fought his own battles within himself and won, is an honor roll student, is a young man anyone would be proud to call their son and embodies the true meaning of the banquet and the word “character.”

• Female Character Achievement winner – Sophomore Caitlyn Ford, has been involved in volleyball, basketball and softball since entering middle school, is disciplined, dependable and diligent in all areas of her academics as well as athletics and is very soft spoken and leads by example.
The keynote speaker at the banquet was Gene Corrigan, former University of Virginia athletic director, ACC Commissioner and president of the NCAA.
