Madison County’s boys cross country team qualified to participate in the state championship meet for first time since 2003, placing ninth overall at the Nov. 8 event at Big Meadows. “Finishing in the top 10 at the state meet is a great accomplishment,” said Madison Coach Jennifer Rehm. Senior Kenny Lohr again led the team, closing out his distinguished high school cross country career with a personal best time of 17 minutes, eight seconds in the five-kilometer race and capturing 14th place, as well as All State honors.

For the Madison County, the volleyball court was always filled with skilled players, laughter and teamwork. Its Mountaineer girls volleyball team struggled with wins on the scoreboard but never lost the heart to play. From beginning to end, the girls worked hard to accomplish their goals and wore a smile through it all. There was constantly a fan club cheering them on and encouraging the team to do their best. All and all, the season was memorable.

“Gentlemen, we can rebuild him … make him better, stronger than before,” began the weekly opening of the hit 70s TV series “Six Million Dollar Man.” This year’s Madison County cross country program conjures up images of the show’s bionic man character, Steve Austin, as Madison’s standout boy runner, senior Kenny Lohr, returns better than ever, despite a bad ankle injury this past spring. And even the Mountaineer runners home course is getting some significant restorative surgery – Hoover Ridge ballfield construction knocked out some segments of it, so it’s being re-routed.

There is only one place to be on Friday nights in Madison County; most people know that to be under the lights at Eddie Dean Field at Booster Park. It is also a place known as the home of the Madison County Mountaineers. In 2007, Madison was 5-5 with only a 2-3 record in the Bull Run District. This year, fourth-year Head Coach Stuart Dean and his staff hope to have a considerably better year and go for the Bull Run District championship as well as a run at the playoffs.
