For the second year, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with the National Child Safety Council so that we may provide educational safety materials for the children of this county. On Sept. 16, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office received an award from the National Child Safety Council for its dedicated service to child safety in our community. We proudly display this plaque in our office. This award was presented to Sheriff Erik Weaver at the annual Sheriff’s Conference in Roanoke.

Thank you to those that were able to donate to the National Child Safety Council. Your donation allows us to receive coloring books, stickers, Internet safety tips, bicycle safety tips and lots of other printed materials. Without your help this would not be possible!

On Sept. 25, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a Freedom of Information Act Request from Mr. Dave Allen, for copies of records pertaining to the National Child Safety Council. Mr. Allen, you and your wife donated to the NCSC last year and we thank you. For some reason, this year you want to scrutinize the organization and accuse the sheriff of being dishonest.

Shame on you! What on earth can you possibly try next?

Perhaps you should see a child’s face light up when they are sitting at the sheriff’s office scared to death and a deputy can walk in the room with a coloring book and a sticker.  They forget where they are and the circumstances that brought them there. This, my friend, is priceless.

My husband and I spend lots of our free time planning and organizing child safety events because we enjoy doing it. We have lots of people that help us and we thank them all.

This latest attempt for Mr. Allen has crossed the line! It has definitely hit a nerve and I am appalled.

Why, Mr. Allen, do you continue to put down the sheriff’s office, and the members thereof? Why can’t you join our efforts to promote child safety for the good of everyone? Why do you constantly think that we are doing things wrong? Is it because it wasn’t your idea?

Perhaps you should attend some of our child safety days and see for yourself what we are doing. It’s great fun and the kids love it!
