In response to Lisa Kelley’s guest column of Aug. 21 — If the animal shelter is managed by animal control officers, who are presumably in their vehicles answering calls about wild or stray animals, who is in the shelter on a daily and consistent basis seeing to the needs of the animals already there? Who is screening adoption applicants? Who is evaluating the animals’ health and readiness for adoption? Who is teaching children how to love and care for defensless animals?
An animal shelter has to be more than a warehouse for unwanted dogs and cats. It has to be a warm and safe haven for lost and frightened pets until a permanent family is found. A community is judged by it’s treatment of its most defenseless members.
How will Madison County be judged?
