UPDATE
Published: April 30, 2008

Bohannon Road (Route 600) in Syria has re-opened after a rockslide halted traffic there April 30.

An SUV-sized chunk of granite, along with multiple smaller pieces, broke off Carpenter’s Mountain and crashed onto the road Wednesday morning between Old Blue Ridge Turnpike (Route 670) and Shotwell Hollow Road (Route 611). Apparently no vehicles were on the stretch of road at the time and there was no report on any injuries.

Virginia Department of Transportation workers used a bulldozer to clear the road and get it reopened by early afternoon.

It was not immediately known what caused the large section of mountain to collapse onto 40- to 50-feet of the road, which lines the Robinson River.
