Undeterred by Friday’s rain, Madison County fans still packed the stands at Eddie Dean Field Sept. 26 for homecoming. Down between the goalposts, Madison Coach Stuart Dean’s Mountaineers weren’t about to be turned back either – despite the wet, slippery conditions, Madison (4-0, 0-0) held firmly to its title as the only undefeated Bull Run District team, squeezing out a 21-14 victory over Shenandoah District foe Page County (2-2, 0-0).
“Page is the toughest team we’ve played all season,” Coach Dean said following the game.
Madison came out on fire, much like it has in its last three games. In each of those games, Madison scored 28 points or more. But it was clear when the Panthers came roaring back that they would not be able to have the same success in this game as they did in previous games.
Madison struck first as it scored in the first quarter when Logan Terrell powered through from five yards out to score the first touchdown of the game at 7:28.
A few minutes later at 4:42, quarterback Will Taylor hit receiver Ryan Banks along the sideline for a 42-yard touchdown pass. That was Banks’ only catch of the evening.
Page started their comeback in the second quarter when at 6:32, quarterback Dakota Wolf hit running back T.A. Pendleton for a five-yard touchdown pass. The visitors from the other side of the mountain scored again and tied it at 14 at 6:39 to go in the fourth quarter with Wolf running it in for a touchdown from a yard out.
Page County began to drive again late in the fourth but fumbled it back to the Mountaineers. Logan Terrell took it 63 yards to the endzone on the following play to make it 21-14 to finish the game off.
In the game, Logan Terrell would finish with 127 yards on 13 carries along with his two touchdowns. Devon Boone also had 78 yards on 12 rushes.
Will Taylor got the passing game going on a couple big plays from scrimmage. He was 5-15 with 71 yards and the touchdown. Dylan Shifflette was Taylor’s favorite target as he got hit twice for 20 yards.
Dakota Wolf was 13-20 with 108 yards in the game for Page as well.
Madison will next go on a two game road trip, visiting Stonewall Jackson High School in Mount Jackson next week before coming to face new border rival Eastern View (a new school in Culpeper County) in two weeks.
