Big family tailgate party Friday

Madison County High School students generally go all out for homecoming. Last year, four even painted themselves blue with white letters spelling out “M-C-H-S.” (Blue and white are the school colors.) The “living canvases” included, from left, Braxton Puryear, Adam Holbrook, Justin Lobban and Nathan Batman. This year, families are encouraged to wear blue and white clothes and attend a special 5:30 p.m. back (south) parking lot pre-game tailgate party.

Friday’s Madison County-Page County football game caps Madison County High School’s annual homecoming celebration. (The match-up is set for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Eddie Dean Field.) In past years, the homecoming game has featured the crowning of the homecoming queen during a special half-time ceremony. (The MCHS student body usually selects the queen by secret ballot and the announcement on who won isn’t made until the ceremony.)

But this year, something new is being added to the mix—a 5:30 p.m. pre-game community family tailgate party. Families are encouraged to bring grills and related picnic items to the back (south) parking lot of MCHS and tailgate.

“I talked with (School Superintendent) Dr. (Brenda) Tanner and she OK’d it just this past week,” said Penny Toliver, who is helping organize the homecoming tailgate party through the new community group the Brightwood resident helped form – Family Outreach Program or FOP. “We’re asking for as many families as possible to participate and for everyone to wear Madison’s colors – blue and white – and ‘Madison Pride’ T-shirts. We want it to be a postive family event.”

FOP, which organized just this past summer, aims to educate the community about the potential problem and preventative measures families and school representatives can take to keep teens out of trouble. It meets monthly at Antioch Baptist Church in Madison. (The next meeting is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.)

For information on the MCHS homecoming tailgate party or FOP, call Penny Toliver at (540) 547-3144 or Karen Terrell at (540) 661-0459.
