Madison Business Expo slated

In keeping with its rural, friendly flavor, last year’s expo offered fresh-popped movie-theater-style popcorn, served up by then-Madison County Economic Development Director Fritz Brittain, who—while cracking a joke or two—prepared a batch for, from left, Maeanna Richards, Leigha Kearns, 13 months, and Wesley Kearns, all of Madison County.

This past spring, nearly 500 people made their way to Madison County’s first ever Business Expo.
This year the Madison Chamber of Commerce – which sponsors the event set for 1-7 p.m. Thursday, May 15 at the Madison County Volunteer Fire Company fire hall – hopes the business affair will be even bigger and better than before.
The chamber has already filled almost all of its approximately 60 available slots for community businesses and organizations for the 2008 event.
The occasion aims to familiarize residents with the assortment of products and services available close to home.
“It gives local businesses the opportunity to showcase their goods and services to the local population. It encourages people to shop locally,” said Fritz Brittain, the county’s former economic development director who helped organized the event.
Some businesses and organizations that will be participating for the first time this year include, Acorn Hill Winery, Mill Valley Barbeques, The Last Nickel, Madison County Public Schools and Drug Detection Connection.
Many of the participating businesses will be giving away a variety of free door prizes, including a massage from Body Logic, a $25 gift certificate to The Last Nickel and free spring tune-ups on a building’s heating and cooling system by Duct-Rite Mechanical.
The Madison County Rescue Squad will be selling refreshments, including hot dogs and hamburgers, at the all-day event. There will also be free popcorn from the Chamber of Commerce, with Brittain manning the booth and offering the snacks with a side of friendly conversation.
The Madison County Volunteer Fire Company fire hall is at 1223 N. Main St. in downtown Madison. For information, call the Madison Chamber of Commerce at (540) 948-4455.
